{"622523":{"#nid":"622523","#data":{"type":"news","title":"IC Researchers Awarded Outstanding Study Design Paper Award at ICWSM-19","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA team of researchers that included individuals from Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ic.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing\u003C\/a\u003E were awarded the Outstanding Study Design Paper award at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.icwsm.org\/2019\/index.php\u0022\u003EInternational AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media\u003C\/a\u003E (ICWSM 2019) this week in Munich, Germany.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe paper, titled \u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.munmund.net\/pubs\/ICWSM19_DrugEffects.pdf\u0022\u003EA Social Media Study on the Effects of Psychiatric Medication Use\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E, was presented by IC Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003EKoustuv Saha\u003C\/strong\u003E and included fellow IC Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003EBenjamin Sugar\u003C\/strong\u003E and IC Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EMunmun De Choudhury\u003C\/strong\u003E. Collaborators from Microsoft Research, Harvard Medical School, and New York University-Shanghai were also involved with the research.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe research addresses a challenge in understanding the effects of psychiatric medications during mental health treatment. While clinical trials help to evaluate effects of the medication, there are challenges in generalizing trials to broader populations. Using a list of common approved and regulated psychiatric medications and a Twitter dataset of 300 million posts from 30,000 individuals, researchers developed machine learning models to first assess effects relating to mood, cognition, depression, anxiety, psychosis, and suicidal ideation and then, based on a score, observe how use of specific drugs are associated with characteristic changes in an individual\u0026rsquo;s psychopathology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe goal of this research is a deeper understanding of effects and how to situate those with treatment outcomes.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EICWSM is a forum for researchers from multiple disciplines to come together to share knowledge, discuss ideas, exchange information, and learn about cutting-edge research in diverse fields with the common theme of online social media. This includes social theories, as well as computational algorithms for analyzing social media.
