After working as a senior member of technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories, Gabert is now in the Sandia Doctoral Studies Program fellowship and works in the Translational Data Analytics Lab led by his advisor, CSE Professor Ümit V. Çatalyürek.

Tell us about your research: 

I work in the area of graph analysis, which is a field in computer science that focuses on the relationships within data, as opposed to the content. I am developing algorithms for finding denser sections of graphs. Or more specifically, algorithms that find graph nuclei for cases when the graphs are rapidly changing as it is important to always have an accurate nuclei decomposition.

What is your favorite conference?

I really appreciate the USENIX conference series’ commitment to open access, both with its papers and presentations.

Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus or in Atlanta?

I enjoy the new CODA building. It’s wonderful for grad students to be able to see outside and enjoy natural light while working. I feel motivated to hang out there all day!

If you could create something, what would it be?

I recently worked on a side project making a box that manages temperatures for sourdough starters. It ended up being a fun way to learn how to program an Arduino and it turns out that light bulbs are great heating elements when pulsed inside of old coolers.

What are some of your Hobbies? 

I enjoy rock climbing, although real rock is a bit challenging to access in Atlanta. I am also always up for skiing, running, and biking. Outside of that, I have always enjoyed trying my hand at photography and experimenting in the kitchen.

What is an interesting fact about yourself? 

I have a twin who works as an architect in Germany.

What are your plans for after graduation? 

I plan to be a staff member at Sandia National Labs.
