I can\u0026rsquo;t wait to learn about all the achievements from their careers!\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EShang-Tse Chen\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERecent CSE graduate\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EShang-Tse Chen\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Ewill begin as an assistant professor at National Taiwan University in 2020. Chen\u0026rsquo;s research focuses on machine learning and security, and some of his most recognizable work includes\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/611783\/erasing-stop-signs-shapeshifter-shows-self-driving-cars-can-still-be-manipulated\u0022\u003EShapeShifter\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/606678\/georgia-tech-teams-intel-protect-artificial-intelligence-malicious-attacks-using-shield\u0022\u003ESHIELD\u003C\/a\u003E, the latter of which won the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.kdd.org\/kdd2018\/\u0022\u003EKDD 2018 Audience Appreciation Award, Runner-Up\u003C\/a\u003E. Chen was also awarded the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/news\/605258\/cse-phd-students-claim-three-prestigious-fellowships\u0022\u003EIBM PH.D. Fellowship in 2018 for his Ph.D. thesis research\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENow, Chen says, \u0026ldquo;I want to pursue a career in academia because I love doing research and being in academia gives me more freedom to work on whatever random ideas that I come up with. I also love working with students. I think it\u0026#39;s a very rewarding experience.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHis main piece of advice to those interested in pursuing careers in academia is to make more connections by talking to people at conferences. He also encourages students to figure out if they want to go to industry or academia as early as possible.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;If you prefer to stay in academia, your advisor can give you more guidance in that direction, such as inviting you to the grant writing process or course preparation,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBo Dai\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBo Dai\u003C\/strong\u003E, a former student of CSE Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ELe Song,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Ewill join the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Spring 2020. His research focuses on machine learning with topics including optimization, reinforcement learning, deep learning, kernel methods, and graphical models.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDai is currently working as a\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ai.google\/research\/people\/106086\u0022\u003Eresearch scientist at Google Brain\u003C\/a\u003E, Mountain View where he focuses on designing principled machine learning methods for structured data.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDai has had numerous works presented at leading deep learning and artificial intelligence conferences, the most recent of which include work on\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ai.google\/research\/pubs\/pub47688\u0022\u003Ekernels\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;at\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.aistats.org\/\u0022\u003EAISTATS 2019\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ai.google\/research\/pubs\/pub47775\u0022\u003EBayesian deep learning\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;at\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/nips.cc\/Conferences\/2018\u0022\u003ENeurIPS 2018.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMinsuk Kahng\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERecently graduated CSE Ph.D. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EMinsuk Kahng\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Ewill begin teaching at Oregon State University in 2020. As a faculty member, Kahng hopes to create and build his research group in a flexible working environment and conduct fundamental research that can make long-term impacts.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKahng followed his advisor, CSE Associate Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/polochau\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPolo Chau\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, in pursuing research in the areas of human-centered artificial intelligence and data visualization. Kahng was recognized on multiple occasions for his research in these fields such as his work with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/news\/611543\/new-visualization-tool-helps-non-experts-understand-neural-networks\u0022\u003EGAN Lab\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and with awards such as the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/news\/605258\/cse-phd-students-claim-three-prestigious-fellowships\u0022\u003E2018 Google Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It wasn\u0026#39;t possible without Polo, my Ph.D. advisor. I\u0026#39;m very grateful for his continued support, guidance, advice, and much more,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKahng\u0026rsquo;s advice for those who want to continue in academia is for students to develop their research agenda.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Ideally, it would be desirable to find an important research problem that can potentially make high impact and become an expert in that field,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;For me, during my early Ph.D. years, I realized that it would be crucial for humans to have the ability to explain the behavior of machine learning models, and I have pursued this line of research.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cstrong\u003EElias Khalil\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ekhalil.com\/\u0022\u003EElias Khalil\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Eis a recent CSE graduate with a focus on discrete optimization, machine learning, integer programming, and artificial intelligence research. At CSE, Elias received the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ic.gatech.edu\/news\/591926\/four-gt-computing-students-earn-2017-ibm-phd-fellowship-awards\u0022\u003E2017 IBM PhD Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;for his work on machine learning approaches for algorithm design. He is currently working at Polytechnique Montr\u0026eacute;al as an\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ivado.ca\/en\/about-us\/\u0022\u003EIVADO\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;Postdoctoral Scholar until June 2020. After his time in Montreal, Khalil is set to join the University of Toronto as an assistant professor of industrial engineering starting July 2020.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I believe that researchers in both academia and industry can have a positive scientific and social impact through their work,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I chose academia because of the substantial freedom in exploring the frontiers of computer science and engineering. Additionally, I am interested in applying the computational techniques that my lab will develop to pressing societal problems such as climate change.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOn the educational side, Khalil expresses his excitement for advising students from diverse backgrounds and seeing them develop new ideas to tackle problems they are passionate about.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe said, \u0026ldquo;Perhaps the biggest difference with industry is the ability to teach and create undergraduate and graduate courses.
