{"627827":{"#nid":"627827","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Movie Featuring Georgia Tech Faculty, Students, Accepted to Film Festival","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EBy Michael Pearson\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA film written and produced by a Georgia Institute of Technology professor and filmed on campus with the involvement of students has been accepted to the Peachtree Village International Film Festival.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EDr. Blues\u003C\/em\u003E tells the story of an aging radio DJ played by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/auslander\u0022\u003EPhilip Auslander\u003C\/a\u003E, professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC), confronting the potential end of his career and lifelong love affair with radio.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBut more than that, the film is really an exploration of how people might find ways to work together, despite their differences, Auslander said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;There are all these issues of gender, race, and generation that initially are getting in the way of the characters being able to work together and make something happen,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDo they? Now in its 13\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E year, it was formerly known as the Sweet Auburn International Film Festival.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELearning and Collaborating\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAuslander conceived of \u003Cem\u003EDr. Blues\u003C\/em\u003E as a way to teach students film production in a collaborative environment with faculty. \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/john-thornton\u0022\u003EJohn Thornton\u003C\/a\u003E, senior academic professional in LMC, served as cinematographer. \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/melissa-foulger\u0022\u003EMelissa Foulger\u003C\/a\u003E, LMC academic professional and artistic director of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/dramatech.org\/\u0022\u003EDramaTech\u003C\/a\u003E, directed the film.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESeveral students worked as crew members, and third-year biomedical engineering student Milan Riddick starred opposite Auslander as \u0026ldquo;DJ Dom,\u0026rdquo; a young African-American radio star who clashes with Auslander\u0026rsquo;s character. She had appeared in DramaTech projects, including the 2017 presentation of \u003Cem\u003EDead Man\u0026rsquo;s Cellphone\u003C\/em\u003E, but had never appeared in a film.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I learned a lot in regard to how film works,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;There\u0026rsquo;s so much more going on around you in the moment while you work than with stage performance. I\u0026rsquo;m so used to acting on stage with my fellow actors once all of the technical aspects are in place. I was so interested in all of the different technical aspects going on behind the scenes while the actors performed.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProfessional actors Liza Jaine and John M. Johnson rounded out the cast.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThornton said the project showcases how the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EIvan Allen College of Liberal Arts\u003C\/a\u003E and LMC are \u0026ldquo;committed to developing and creating content that champions the humanities, science and technology.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;\u003Cem\u003EDr. Blues\u003C\/em\u003E is a masterclass of sorts that reflects the type of synthesis of textual analysis, performance interpretation, and technical application that we hope and expect our students to demonstrate,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026lsquo;A Pilot Project\u0026rsquo;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMedia studies is a thread within LMC\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/lmcdegree.lmc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EBachelor of Science in Literature, Media, and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E degree program. The school also offers a minor in film and media studies and a certificate in film media. Film studies also plays into the new \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/gmc.iac.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EMaster of Science in Global Media and Cultures\u003C\/a\u003E offered jointly by LMC and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/modlangs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Modern Languages\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAuslander plans to begin offering a course in producing that would potentially coordinate with more technically oriented film production classes offered by Thornton, scriptwriting classes offered by Senior Academic Professional \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.lmc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/jc-reilly\u0022\u003EJ.C.
