{"629228":{"#nid":"629228","#data":{"type":"news","title":"GT Experts Bring Diverse Perspectives on the Challenges and Importance of Algorithmic Fairness","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAcademics and industry experts are still not entirely on the same page when it comes to researching fairness and bias in machine learning, even though the results impact people in huge ways, such as if they can receive an organ transplant, are recognized by autonomous vehicles, or advance in the hiring process.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo help aide discussion around this hot topic, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ml.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003Ethe Machine Learning Center at Georgia Tech (ML@GT)\u003C\/a\u003E hosted a seminar and panel discussion about the work that its faculty members are doing in these areas. On Nov. 6, four faculty members affiliated with ML@GT presented their recent research that is focused on different aspects of fairness and bias.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPanelist and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.isye.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EH. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE\u003C\/a\u003E) assistant professor \u003Cstrong\u003ERachel Cummings\u003C\/strong\u003E encouraged attendees to make fairness a priority.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This field is still so new but also so important. We need more people doing fairness research,\u0026rdquo; said Cummings.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECummings\u0026rsquo; presentation focused on privacy, data, and algorithmic fairness. Her colleagues \u003Cstrong\u003ESwati Gupta\u003C\/strong\u003E, an assistant professor in ISyE and \u003Cstrong\u003EJudy Hoffman\u003C\/strong\u003E, an assistant professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ic.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing\u003C\/a\u003E discussed the mathematics of bias and fairness and analyzing fairness in computer vision systems respectively.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This work encourages us to get back to the basics of what we are doing and why we are doing it.
