{"63143":{"#nid":"63143","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Celebrates 786 Patents Thanks to Tech  Transfer Law","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Institute of Technology celebrates this month the 30th anniversary\nof the Bayh-Dole Act, landmark federal legislation that has driven Tech\u2019s innovation\nfrom campus to the marketplace.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESince the law\u2019s passage in\nDecember 1980, Georgia Tech has secured 786 patents and 592 active licenses for\ninnovative devices and products, widely disseminating the benefits of the\nInstitute\u2019s discoveries.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe Bayh-Dole Act allowed\nuniversities to own the intellectual property developed through federally\nsponsored research to both facilitate innovation and to create new economic\ndevelopment opportunities,\u201d said Stephen Cross, executive vice president for\nresearch at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAdopted in 1980, the\nBayh-Dole Act gave universities, as well as small businesses and non-profits, ownership\nof the innovations that result from federally funded research.\u0026nbsp; The bill encouraged Georgia Tech and other research\ninstitutions to patent their inventions, license the findings to companies, create\ngoods and services for the market and share the royalties with the inventors.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech Research\nCorporation (GTRC) was established to advance research and technology at the\nInstitute and encourage entrepreneurship through its stewardship of funds.\nThrough technology transfer, GTRC enables the Institute to maintain beneficial\npartnerships with public and private sectors in research and technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFollowing are some of Georgia\nTech\u2019s notable startups and technologies under the Bayh-Dole Act:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECardioMEMS Inc.\nis a medical device company formed around microelectromechanical systems technology\nlicensed from the Georgia Tech Research Corporation and MIT in 2001. CardioMEMS\nhas developed multiple wireless sensing and communication devices designed to\nimprove the management of cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure,\nhypertension and aneurysms. \u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMedShape Solutions\nis dedicated to restoring human motion by innovating unique shape memory\northopedic devices. By using shape memory devices, surgeons are able to use smaller\nincisions, complete stronger surgical repairs and promote faster healing of\ndamaged bones and tissues.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ENyloboard uses\n100 percent recycled carpet fibers and no wood in manufacturing, which means\nless carpet ends up in landfills. Studies by the EPA show that 4 billion pounds\nof carpet are being dumped into the nation\u0027s landfills annually. Unlike\npressed-wood products such as particleboard and fiberboard, Nyloboard\ncontributes no pesticides or chemicals to contaminate soil and water.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBehavior Capture use small\ncameras placed in a child\u2019s environments to observe and analyze activities that\nmay trigger a behavioral episode in children with autism.
