However, Wheaton celebrates diversity and promotes cultural inclusion all twelve months of the year.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;As far back as I can recall, I was taught to value humanity, love those around you, and learn their perspectives,\u0026rdquo; says Wheaton, an associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences. \u0026ldquo;Our society is made great not just because of the wonderful blend of culture that we can see all around us, but in our ability to really value our neighbors.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn both his personal and professional life, Wheaton takes direct action to improve cultural awareness and consider the interests of wider ranges of humanity.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring conversations with colleagues \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/faculty\/Manu-O-Platt\u0022\u003EManu Platt\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/pollock\u0022\u003EAnne Pollock\u003C\/a\u003E, Wheaton realized a lack of interdisciplinary focus on the relationship between scientific study and social influences. Rather than let their ideas end in conversation, the cohort launched Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s working group on \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.racebiomed.org\/\u0022\u003ERace and Racism in Contemporary Biomedicine\u003C\/a\u003E in 2015. Today, the group works with various metro Atlanta Colleges to develop programming addressing race and racism in biomedical research.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen Wheaton leaves Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s campus, he continues to promote diversity and inclusion. And, when it comes to encouraging diversity in one\u0026#39;s personal life, Wheaton underscores the importance of taking small daily actions to increase one\u0026rsquo;s cultural awareness.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Whether in science, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/news\/lewis-wheaton-scientist-citizen-councilman\u0022\u003Epublic service as an elected official\u003C\/a\u003E, or in leadership in societies, I do all I can to ensure that we consider the needs and interests of wider-ranges of humanity,\u0026rdquo; he says.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith the encouragement of his parents and inspiration from Frederick Douglass, Wheaton says he learned the importance of cultural celebration. Each February he devotes extra attention to the black community, sharing many untold and unappreciated aspects of black culture and history.
