{"63948":{"#nid":"63948","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Grad Students Compete for $85,000 in Awards at GTRIC","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWith another year of record-breaking participation, the\nGeorgia Tech Research and Innovation Conference (GTRIC) will convene 400\ngraduate students presenting their research to the Tech community at an open\nevent on Tuesday, Feb. 8.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThis year, GTRIC will award $85,000 in prizes, including the\nGeorgia Tech Edison Prize \u2014 a $15,000 award established in 2010 to foster the\nformation of start-up companies from research conducted at the Institute.\nStudents work closely with Georgia Tech\u2019s Venture Lab to fine-tune their ideas\nand presentations prior to the event, and the winner continues that partnership\nto further develop an enterprise after the competition.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMonetary awards for participants in the Poster Competition\nportion of the convention this year include $5,000 fellowship awards to the top\nfive poster presentations and $1,500 travel grants to the next 30 best posters.\nAwards are funded through financial support from individual colleges and the\nOffice of the Provost.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe fellowship awards are for continued research, and the\ntravel grants are for students to go to conferences and present around the\ncountry,\u201d said Lauren Polander, vice president of academic affairs for the\nGraduate Student Government Association. Polander has been working since last\nJuly to coordinate entries and organize the growing event.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe\u2019re really excited about the event this year, and seeing\nhow it goes and what we will be able to do for next year,\u201d Polander said. She\nhopes that the move from last year\u2019s venue at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference\nCenter to the larger space in the Student Center Ballroom will encourage more\nattendance from the Tech community.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe\u2019d love for undergrads in particular to see posters and\nfind research they may be interested in, or a group to research with \u2014\u0026nbsp;it\u2019s\na great way to get research and projects on campus out to the school,\u201d Polander\nsaid.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETen finalists, pared down from about 100 applicants, will\npresent their research at the Innovation Competition on Monday, Feb. 7. The\nwinner will present at the awards ceremony for the entire event the evening of\nTuesday, Feb. 8, at the Ferst Center for the Arts. Posters from all Innovation\nCompetition finalists will be on display during the poster sessions.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis is one of my favorite events on campus,\u201d said Melissa\nMoore, director of communications for Auxiliary Services, who has been involved\nin the event since its first iteration seven years ago. \u201cIt\u2019s such a good way\nfor people in the Georgia Tech community to see some of the fantastic research\nthat\u2019s going on right here.
