Rubin Appointed Co-Editor of ‘Terrorism and Political Violence’

Larry Rubin, associate professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, has been named co-editor of Terrorism and Political Violence, the leading journal in terrorism studies.

Rubin is an expert in Middle Eastern politics and national security, focusing on regional relations, religion and politics, and nuclear proliferation. He served as a senior advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy and as a senior advisor for United States Institute of Peace’s Task Force on Extremism in Fragile States.

“I got involved with this journal when I was a graduate student copy-editing papers. Later I became an assistant editor and then an associate editor working for the last ten years with an esteemed editorial team, including John Horgan, Max Taylor and co-founding editor David Rapoport. I am excited to help further our mission to advance scholarship in this area,” Rubin said.

“I have been fortunate to work on the editorial side of Terrorism and Political Violence to help shape the field, which has grown tremendously since 9/11. The journal was founded by David Rapoport and the late Paul Wilkinson in 1989, long before terrorism was “cool,” and it stands out for its rigor and interdisciplinary approach.”

Rubin is the author and editor of three books, including The End of Strategic Stability? Nuclear Weapons and the Challenge of Regional Rivalries, co-edited with Adam Stulberg, Islam in the Balance: Ideational Threats in Arab Politics, and Terrorist Rehabilitation and Counter-Radicalisation: New Approaches to Counter-terrorism with Rohan Gunaratna and Jolene Jerard.

He recently edited a special issue for the journal Orbis, “Emerging Technology and National Security” 64:4 (Fall 2020).

In addition to the Terrorism and Political Violence appointment, Rubin recently was invited to join the editorial board of Global Studies Quarterly, a new journal of the International Studies Association.

The journal seeks to publish works in “international politics, or the intersection of global politics with economy, society, or culture.”
