{"64411":{"#nid":"64411","#data":{"type":"news","title":"A Junior\u2019s Grill Legend Says \u2018Farewell\u2019 to Tech","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIf your favorite order is a baked sweet potato and fried okra, she\u2019s the type of lady who will make sure it\u2019s on the table waiting when you walk in the door. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EShe\u2019s also the type of lady who will offer up a homemade loaf of bread or a bit of advice to someone who is feeling a little homesick or just having a bad day. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis lady is Anne Pamfilis, known to most on campus as \u201cMiss Anne,\u201d and in December she retired from \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.juniors.gatech.edu\/Pages\/default.aspx\u0022\u003EJunior\u2019s Grill\u003C\/a\u003E after 33 years of service.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMy favorite part of the job was the interaction,\u201d said Anne, who is 81 years young. \u201cI\u2019d share my stories and advise them [the customers]. I was on my feet all day long, but it didn\u2019t bother me.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnne began working at Junior\u2019s in the 1970s, when Tommy Klemis, her nephew who owns the business, offered her a job. From that point on, Anne became a fixture at the grill. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMiss Anne has been my best story source; she knows everyone and everything on campus,\u201d said Kim Link-Wills of the Alumni Association. \u201cI wish we could have had her on the Alumni Magazine staff.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAccording to Sandi Bramblett of Institutional Research and Planning, 166,893 students have taken classes at Tech since 1974. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMy educated guess is that Anne served at least 90 percent of them,\u201d she added.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOf course, Anne had her regular customers including the group that always came in for coffee or the customer who would bring her fig preserves. When she had an operation on her knee, some even brought in remedies to help ease her pain. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThey were my family,\u201d Anne said. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnd Anne\u2019s customers were just as sentimental about her.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhen I was expecting my first son, she made sure that I had a baked sweet potato and fried okra whenever I walked through the door,\u201d Bramblett said. \u201cAnd she always remembered that my husband and I had our first date at Junior\u2019s, and without fail, would tell each of us how lucky we are to have found each other.\u201d \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAmelia Gambino of Communications and Marketing appreciates the impact that Anne had on her husband while he was a student at Tech. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI\u2019m grateful to Anne for teaching my husband to find his way around a kitchen,\u201d she said. \u201cHe worked at Junior\u2019s when he was a student at Tech in the 1970s and learned all about cleaning and cooking.\u201d \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBut Anne\u2019s nephew may be the most grateful for her time at Junior\u2019s.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMy aunt has always been a listener and encourager regarding anything I needed to share about work or family,\u201d Klemis said. \u201cAlthough I\u2019ll still be able to tap her wisdom at family get-togethers, I\u2019ll miss her daily presence and assurance that the day\u2019s challenges will turn out OK.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlthough Anne is still adjusting to retirement, she has kept busy with chores around her Sandy Springs home and getting reacquainted with her neighbors. She\u2019s also looking forward to playing bridge, spending time with family and volunteering. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI\u2019ve got so much to be thankful for,\u201d Anne said. \u201cWhat else would I want?\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWell, Anne, the Tech community is thankful, too, and perhaps Billiee Pendleton-Parker of the Student Success Center put it best:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cA day without Miss Anne is a day without a genuinely warm greeting, a nugget of Tech news, sincere laughter and cordial caring,\u201d she said. \u201cAnne will be sorely missed, and Tech is a better place because she was here.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAnne Pamfilis, known to most on campus as \u201cMiss Anne,\u201d retired from Junior\u0027s Grill in December.
