{"64686":{"#nid":"64686","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Institute Implements Good Samaritan Provision","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWith the health\nand safety of students at top of mind, Georgia Tech has implemented a Good\nSamaritan Provision, effective March 1, as part of its Student Policy on Alcohol\nand Other Drugs.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Institute\ndeveloped the Provision to support students who make an emergency call for any\nstudent whose judgment or health is severely affected due to alcohol\nconsumption.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe Good Samaritan Provision\nfirst and foremost is a health response, not a disciplinary response,\u201d said\nDean of Students John Stein. \u201cWe were anxious to bring something forward that would\nreinforce the fact that as a community, we count on each other to keep each\nother safe. We want to move away from a way of thinking that makes students\nhesitant to make the right move or make a phone call.\u201d The Provision is\napplicable both to those students making calls and to those for whom calls are\nbeing made.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMatlock Rogers,\nvice president of student organizations for the Student Government Association,\nwas part of the Alcohol Implementation Committee that played a role in\ninstituting this piece of policy. He said students have been exceedingly\nsupportive in their response to the new Provision.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cStudents are\nglad they\u2019re able to help people without worrying about repercussions for\nthemselves or the others they help,\u201d Rogers said. \u201cThere is comfort knowing\nthat should something happen to you in an alcohol-related incident, other\nstudents won\u2019t have a disincentive to take action.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Provision\u2019s utilization is\ncontingent on students completing any education or treatment recommended in\nresponse to an incident by the Office of Student Integrity or Department of\nHousing. Many other universities have implemented equivalent policies,\nincluding neighbors Emory University and the University of Georgia. Stein\nsaid the possibility of implementing such a Provision has been in discussion\nsince at least 2006.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis is just a\npiece of an environmental response to these types of issues,\u201d Stein said. \u201cFine-tuning\nsome of the logistical pieces took us a while to sort through.
