{"64842":{"#nid":"64842","#data":{"type":"event","title":"DATHA Lecture: Eleanor Smith, Concrete Change","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Design and Technologies for Healthy Aging (DATHA) welcomes Eleanor Smith,\n Concrete Change, who will speaks about \u0022VISIT-ABILITY: Inclusive Home \nDesign\u0022.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEleanor Smith (M.A., M. Ed.) is the Director of \nConcrete Change, an Atlanta-based national organization founded in 1987 \nto work for basic disability access to become standard practice in new \nhomes. For this concept, she popularized the terms \u201cVisitability\u201d and \n\u201cInclusive Home Design.\u201d During the past two decades, she has helped \nmany advocates across the country organize to promote home access \npolicies. These policies have resulted to date in more than 40,000 \nvisitable homes built deliberately with access even though not \ndesignated for residents who currently have disabilities, and \nconstructed in a wide variety of locations, climates and topographies.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EShe\n has produced several widely-used educational tools on Visitable \nconstruction and has co-authored articles published by Urban Land \nmagazine, the Journal of the American Planning Association, and the AARP\n Public Policy Institute. In 1999, she received a Best Practices award \nfrom the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and in 2004 \nthe Housing Champion award from the Georgia Department of Community \nAffairs.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAt DATHA, Eleanor Smith will give a short presentation \nabout the basics of visitability, the associated health implications, and approaches to policy change with examples of how these \nhave played out in Georgia and nationally.
