{"648625":{"#nid":"648625","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Laura Cadonati Named Associate Dean for Research","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELaura Cadonati\u003C\/strong\u003E has been appointed as the new associate dean for Research in the College of Sciences (CoS) Dean\u0026rsquo;s Office at the Georgia Institute of Technology effective July 1, 2021.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/user\/laura-cadonati\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003ECadonati\u003C\/a\u003E serves as a professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003ESchool of Physics\u003C\/a\u003E and as director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cra.gatech.edu\/\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003ECenter for Relativistic Astrophysics\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am delighted to welcome Laura to the CoS Dean\u0026rsquo;s Office,\u0026rdquo; says Susan Lozier, dean of the College of Sciences and Betsy Middleton and John Clark Sutherland Chair. \u0026ldquo;She is an accomplished researcher and educator whose breadth of experience will be invaluable to the College. She joined the Center for Relativistic Astrophysics (CRA) at Georgia Tech in January 2015 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and was \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/news\/laura-cadonati-and-tamara-bogdanovic-lead-center-relativistic-astrophysics\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003Eappointed director of the CRA\u003C\/a\u003E in July 2020.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am honored by the trust the College of Sciences is placing in me,\u0026rdquo; Cadonati shares, \u0026ldquo;and I look forward to supporting our faculty in all the ways necessary to advance their research to new levels \u0026mdash; and deepening our College\u0026rsquo;s scientific impact on our campus and in society as a whole.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs associate dean for Research, Cadonati will focus on cultivating College of Sciences faculty members to develop and sustain excellence in scholarship and research, as well as creating an environment in which innovation, entrepreneurship, and public service are fundamental characteristics of graduates of the College.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe will coordinate the research enterprise and agenda for the College and its stakeholders, and will foster the College\u0026rsquo;s leadership in developing scientific solutions for a better world.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECadonati will also focus on identifying new research opportunities, encouraging research collaborations, facilitating partnerships among faculty both within and outside of the Institute, and will execute on the College\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/strategic-plan\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003Enew strategic plan\u003C\/a\u003E to realize our shared mission and vision.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to a continued embrace of fundamental science, Cadonati will focus on cross-cutting and convergent scientific directions to guide the College\u0026rsquo;s research investments, specifically elevating the following \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/strategicplan\/college-of-sciences-georgia-tech-strategic-plan-2021-2030.pdf#page=12\u0026amp;zoom=auto,-227,763\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003Eongoing initiatives\u003C\/a\u003E within the six schools of the College:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EQuantum systems including quantum materials, quantum computing, and quantum information science\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003ENeuroscience, physics of movement, and robotics\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EMicrobial dynamics and infection, evolution, astrobiology, and the origins of life\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EPlanetary sciences and astrophysics\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EData science that harnesses machine learning and artificial intelligence to spur the data revolution in the sciences\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EClimate science, biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and global change\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECadonati\u0026rsquo;s own \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/user\/laura-cadonati\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003Eresearch interests\u003C\/a\u003E include gravitational waves and particle astrophysics. She has published and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, has presented a number of lectures and invited seminars, and has held leadership positions in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), including leading its data analysis and astrophysics division at the time of the discovery of gravitational waves \u0026mdash; \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/2017\/10\/03\/gravitational-wave-confirmations-earn-2017-nobel-prize-physics\u0022 style=\u0022text-decoration:none;\u0022\u003Ewhich led to the 2017 Nobel prize in Physics\u003C\/a\u003E to the founders of the project. As deputy spokesperson for the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, she has facilitated collaborations between LIGO and its partners, including astronomers and particle observatories around the world.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECadonati is a fellow of the American Physical Society and is a recipient of the prestigious NSF CAREER (Faculty Early Career Development Program) award.
