  <title><![CDATA[The last 7 years have been the warmest on record as planet approaches critical threshold]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>A new analysis by the European Union&rsquo;s <a href="https://climate.copernicus.eu">Copernicus Climate Change Service,</a> which tracks global temperature and other climate indicators, found 2021 was the fifth-warmest year on record.&nbsp;Earth&rsquo;s average temperature is around 1.1 degrees Celsius above average pre-industrial levels, and that&#39;s a &quot;conservative&quot; estimate,&nbsp;according to <a href="https://eas.gatech.edu/people/cobb-dr-kim">Kim Cobb</a>, Georgia Power Chair,&nbsp;ADVANCE Professor in the <a href="https://eas.gatech.edu">School of Earth and Atmospheric Science</a>s, and director of Georgia Tech&#39;s <a href="https://globalchange.gatech.edu">Global Change Program</a>. (Cobb was not involved in the analysis.)</p>
