Yanni Loukissas, associate professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, published an article titled “Who Wants to Live in a Filter Bubble?: From ‘Zillow Surfing’ to Data-Driven Segregation” in Interactions. In the article, Loukissas analyzes how the real-estate website Zillow contributes to data-driven segregation, relating to his broader research in participatory mapping, critical visualization, data studies, and smart cities.

“People have learned to use data to refresh the timeworn dream of owning the right home in the right neighborhood,” Loukissas writes. “This new version, which we might call the algorithmic American dream goes something like this: Access to data and algorithmic tools can help us get control of our lives by reducing uncertainties and making our lived realities resemble our filter bubbles.”
