  <title><![CDATA[Georgia Tech Honors Juneteenth ]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p><strong>On June 19, 1865</strong>&nbsp;&mdash; More than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation &mdash; enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free from bondage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Campus will be closed on <strong>Monday, June 20, 2022</strong>, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Juneteenth also called &ldquo;Juneteenth Independence Day,&rdquo; &ldquo;Freedom Day&rdquo; or &ldquo;Emancipation Day&rdquo; is a day to&nbsp;celebrate the freedom of African Americans from slavery in the United States. Those who value&nbsp;freedom, human rights, and&nbsp;a future where everyone can pursue happiness equally also celebrate this day.</p>

<p>On <strong>Friday, June 17, 2022</strong>, 11 - 3&nbsp;p.m.,&nbsp;The Office of Minority Educational Development within Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, along with Student Diversity Programs in the Division of Student Engagement and Well-Being, will host&nbsp;the second annual Georgia Tech Juneteenth celebration.&nbsp;Contact Jelani Liddell at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:jelani@gatech.edu"><strong>jelani@gatech.edu</strong></a>&nbsp;for more information.</p>
