At the time, this was controversial with the Catholic Church, which supported an Earth-centered model of the universe. After its publication in 1624, the Inquisition charged Galileo with heresy and condemned him to life imprisonment. The book remained on the Inquisition\u0026rsquo;s list of prohibited books until 1822.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis copy is bound with Galileo\u0026rsquo;s last published work\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ETwo New Sciences\u003C\/em\u003E, which discusses mechanics and motion. \u003Cem\u003ETwo New Sciences\u003C\/em\u003E is often cited as the first modern textbook of physics; Isaac Newton claimed it influenced his first two laws of motion.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Archives\u0026rsquo; copy was published in 1699 in Latin and contains the fifth edition of\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ESystema Cosmicum\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;and the third edition of\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ETwo New Sciences\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Archives also acquired a first edition of Galileo\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EOpere\u003C\/em\u003E, consisting of 17 books and published letters bound in 2 volumes, printed in 1655 and 1656. It includes the well-known work\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ESidereus Nuncius\u003C\/em\u003E, in which Galileo observed the cycles of the moon with a telescope and included engravings of the lunar surface.
