Haley\u0026rsquo;s estate established the creation of merit-based graduate fellowships at Georgia Tech in honor of her late husband, Herbert P. Haley, ME 1933. It is an award which may be held in conjunction with other funding, assistantships, or fellowships, if applicable.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMeet the scholars\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EKarim Lakhani \u003C\/strong\u003Eis a 5th-year Ph.D. student who is studying paleoceanography in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/jls.eas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EADVANCE Professor Jean Lynch-Stieglitz\u0026rsquo;s\u003C\/a\u003E lab. The fellowship will allow Lakhani to spend more time on research, where he is currently \u0026ldquo;looking at the transition between the surface ocean and the deep ocean and how that was different, so the shells I look at are from organisms that floated at specific depths in the ocean in the past.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECody Mashburn\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026rsquo;s research interest is the cognitive basis of individual differences in intelligence and reasoning. \u0026ldquo;Basically, why do we see variability in how well people are able to perform on intelligence tests, and how well they are able to problem solve,\u0026rdquo; he said. Mashburn will use the funds to add \u0026ldquo;more tools to my research arsenal\u0026rdquo; and to attend relevant workshops.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAndrew McAvoy\u003C\/strong\u003E is a fifth-year Ph.D. student who plans to use the Haley funds for registration and travel-related expenses so he can present his research at scientific conferences.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;My graduate research involves studying small molecule production in \u003Cem\u003EBurkholderia cepacia\u003C\/em\u003E complex bacteria, one of the most feared pathogens infecting cystic fibrosis patients,\u0026rdquo; McAvoy said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJoshua Pughe-Sanford\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026rsquo;s fascination with dynamics \u0026mdash; how things move, breaking down complex behavior into simpler parts \u0026mdash; drives his physics research. \u0026ldquo;Dynamics can describe how elementary particles collide, how neurons fire in our brain, how traffic accrues, how galaxies collide,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;The list goes on and on and, in essence, the work I do can be applied to all these different fields.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ERoberta Shapiro\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026rsquo;s research centers on using topology \u0026mdash; the study of geometric properties that stay the same, even when they are distorted \u0026mdash; to answer questions in complex dynamics. Saying that \u0026ldquo;mathematics is all about collaboration,\u0026rdquo; the fourth-year graduate student plans on using the funds to attend conferences \u0026ldquo;and make connections with future collaborators.
