{"662569":{"#nid":"662569","#data":{"type":"external_news","title":"Historic Maryville marsh damaged by drought getting new life with volunteers in the muck","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA Georgia Tech alumnus, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of Biological Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;Professor and Associate Chair of Research \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/joel-kostka\u0022\u003EJoel Kostka\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;are working to\u0026nbsp;restore\u0026nbsp;seven acres of degraded salt marsh in historic\u0026nbsp;Ashleyville, S.C. \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/historyabovewater.org\/speaker\/albert-george\/\u0022\u003EAlbert George\u003C\/a\u003E, who received an M.S.\u0026nbsp;from Georgia Tech, is a former conservation director with the South Carolina Aquarium who\u0026nbsp;is credited with spearheading work\u0026nbsp;to restore\u0026nbsp;the marsh.\u0026nbsp;A group led\u0026nbsp;by Kostka,\u0026nbsp;who has a joint appointment in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and is researching coastal wetlands,\u0026nbsp;received a grant\u0026nbsp;from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nfwf.org\/programs\/national-coastal-resilience-fund\u0022\u003ENational Coastal Resilience Fund\u003C\/a\u003E for the marsh restoration project.\u0026nbsp;Ashleyville was formerly known as Maryville, once a self-sustaining Black community,\u0026nbsp;chartered and settled in 1886.
