Featuring historic photographs, first-hand accounts, documents, and artifacts, Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill: New South Industry offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and impact of the Mill. 

An official opening is planned for late September, with programming throughout the fall featuring local and Institute experts discussing the mill’s history and influence.  

“Through an array of fascinating artifacts, photographs, and historical documents, visitors will witness the mill's evolution, its impact on the local community, and the lives of the individuals who worked there," said Jody Thompson, head of the Archives, Records Management & Digital Curation department. “Don’t miss this chance to explore the milestones, challenges, and innovations that defined the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill's legacy.”  

The Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill, established in 1881, holds a significant place in Georgia's industrial history and played a pivotal role in the state's economic growth. This iconic mill became a major contributor to the development of Atlanta's textile industry and was instrumental in shaping the city's landscape – particularly the area known as Cabbagetown. The mill is also closely tied to the growth of Georgia Tech’s textile engineering department, now known as the School of Materials Science and Engineering.  

“In addition to providing a unique learning opportunity for students, we invite faculty members to integrate this exhibition into their syllabi,” said Thompson. “The exhibit's engaging content and historical significance make it an ideal teaching resource across various disciplines, including history, economics, urban development, and more.”
