This will include a focus on three distinct but interrelated thrust areas, specifically: integrated microwave photonic system design and test, which will examine a selection of microwave system functions which may be advantageously performed in the integrated photonics domain; integrated microwave photonics radiation effects, which will examine the performance of such designs after exposure to space-relevant radiation environments; and system architecture design, which will examine the fundamental and practical tradeoffs of implementing photonics in the microwave system, including a trade assessment between digital and analog photonic links for high-performance microwave applications. A literature review will be provided for each of these thrust areas, highlighting relevant work which has been done in these fields to date.
