{"68944":{"#nid":"68944","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Aerospace Lab Wins First Place in AIAA Graduate Missile Design Competition","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Institute of Technology\u2019s Aerospace Systems Design\nLaboratory earned first place in this year\u2019s Graduate Missile Design\nCompetition, sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and\nAstronautics (AIAA).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory, which was founded\nin 1992, is a component of the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering in\nthe College of Engineering at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe competition, organized annually by the AIAA Technical\nCommittee, requires teams to engage targets at ranges of at least 500 nautical\nmiles\u003Cstrong\u003E \u003C\/strong\u003Ein less than 10 minutes in the\npresence of hypersonic flight speeds. Georgia Tech competed against two other\nteams from Auburn University and the Naval Post Graduate School.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech team\u2019s final design uses a three-stage\nsolid rocket ballistic missile that can reach speeds in excess of Mach 6 upon\nimpact. The final design can also launch from naval ships and military\naircraft.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe design team, led by Scott Strong, program manager, and\nWilliam Garrison, chief engineering, consists of Aerospace Engineering graduate\nstudents Jeremy Bennetch, Christopher Brenci, Grace Contino, Addison Dunn, Blaine\nLaughlin and Anthony Piplica.
