Online sites that are quickly launched are often the worst even when they look good-- for students with disabilities, these sites tend to be almost unusable.

This workshop will highlight several simple guidelines to keep in mind as you create a site that is easy to navigate, comprehensible, and accessible for everyone. Using these guidelines will reduce the flood of repetitive questions that tend to plague instructors when online sites are not functioning well. Instead, you and your students will work together in an environment that supports learning.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM (Lunch provided) Student Center, Crescent Room, Registration Required

"Improving STEM Labs as Learning Environments"

How can you adapt your labs to students' needs while still maintaining the academic rigor that you and your departments require?

According to a 2006 report from Utah State University, there are three main strategies for designing labs that are accessible to all students: (1) adjust pedagogy, (2) modify equipment and environment, and (3) use technology. In this SciTrainU workshop, we will explore how we can adjust pedagogy to improve student learning in the lab environment. We'll consider various models of instructional design, including Universal Design for Learning, and work with you to determine how best to accomplish your instructional goals.

Friday, April 1, 2011
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM (Lunch provided) Student Center, Crescent Room, Registration Required

"Improving Large Lecture Class Learning Outcomes by Focusing on Students with Disabilities"

SciTrain U has set out in our pilot to address the barriers in large lectures for students with disabilities and secondarily all students. First, because we want to include all students in all activities while being sensitive to the needs of those with special needs, but also because the focus on the barriers for students with disabilities has clearly pointed out the problems of large lecture for most students that need to be addressed.

In this study report and workshop, one of the SciTrainU study participants and Stephen Rehberg will present the successes and challenges of a group note-taking activity in a 343 student lecture class. This workshop will show positive outcomes for all students through the changes in instructional design, pedagogy, and Universal Design for Learning.

To register, go to: http://www.cetl.gatech.edu/workshops/

Learn simple guidelines to improve navigation, readability, and clarity for any website or web materials, to improve learner engagement in labs, and to improve learner participation and outcomes in large lecture.
http://www.gatech.edu/contact/index.html?id=ft24">Contact Felicia Turner
404-894-9418
