In the last five years, according to Engineering News Record surveys, fees earned by the 100 largest companies providing these services have doubled to $13.9 billion. This growth is in part a reflection of the increasing complexity of facilities in terms of both content and process, leading owners to seek higher levels of expertise to extract better value from their design and construction providers.

Chuck Thomsen was one of the early originators of both construction and program management and has helped craft its evolution over forty years or more. He argues that today most facilities in America are built by serial builders, that programs offer enormous opportunities for improvement of design and construction processes and that the shift from project to program thinking is changing project delivery strategies.

Thomsen will be joined by George Heery, President of the Brookwood Group and the following panel of owners who will act as respondents to the address:
Jen Fabrick, University Architect, Emory University
Buddy Hill, Project Officer, General Services Administration
David Oshinski, Corporate Director of Construction, Home Depot

Thomsen consults with clients who have building programs. He is Chairman of the Rice Building Institute (Houston, TX) and a member of the board of MOCA, Inc. (Boston, MA) and of FMI, Inc. (Raleigh, NC). He joined 3D/International in 1982 and led the company until it merged with Parsons in 2006. Previously he spent 18 years with Caudill, Rowlett & Scott where he started one of the country’s first construction management companies and subsequently became CEO of the parent company. He has worked on hundreds of projects in 20 countries and has personal experience with every form of project delivery in all three basic roles: Designer, Constructor and Manager.

Thomsen is the first person to be elected a Fellow in both the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).
