{"72666":{"#nid":"72666","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Securely Access Online Services with VPN","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIf you ever use any of Georgia Tech\u2019s remote desktop or file sharing programs from your home computer, without first connecting to the Institute\u2019s virtual private network (VPN), things are about to change. \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhen people access GT local service like desktops and unit file servers from off-campus and do not use our secure remote access solutions, they are opening Tech up to hackers,\u201d said Jason Belford, information security manager in the Office of Information Technology. \u201cThe Institute has experienced an increased number of compromised machines by hackers when a VPN is not used to securely access our systems via the Internet.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETo remedy this issue, starting January 2012, members of the Tech community will need to use the VPN to access the following services (for a full list, click \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3qj9u5j\u0022\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E):\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDatabases (MySQL, Oracle, etc.)\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EFile-sharing programs (CIFS\/SMB, Apple File Sharing, NFS, etc.)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ERemote desktop programs (Windows Remote Desktop, Apple ScreenSharing, etc.)\u2022\tPrinting programs\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EProxy services\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBackup services\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cGeorgia Tech\u2019s web-based services, such as My GaTech, TechWorks and T-Square will still be available without connecting to the VPN,\u201d Belford added. \u0026nbsp;For more information about the VPN, or send an email \u003Ca href=\u0022mailto:ask.infosec@gatech.edu\u0022\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is a VPN?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EA virtual private network (VPN) is a piece of software that allows users to securely access a company\u2019s network from a remote location, in this case, the GT network from off-campus locations.
