{"81171":{"#nid":"81171","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Maryann Thompson, FAIA named 2012 Portman Visiting Critic","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech\nSchool of Architecture is pleased to announce the appointment of Maryann\nThompson as the 2012 Portman Visiting Critic.\u0026nbsp;Founder and principal of\nMaryann Thompson Architects, she is widely recognized for her firm\u2019s design\nexcellence evident in its approach to the craft and fabric of building, site-integration, and\nsustainability.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAs Portman\nVisiting Critic, Thompson will participate as a visiting design studio critic\nand guest lecturer, and will serve as jury chair for the selection of the\nPortman Prize recipients. She will also contribute to the School\u2019s\ncomprehensive building design workshop organized in the second year of the\nthree-year Master of Architecture program.\u0026nbsp; This graduate design studio\nintegrates coursework in architectural and site design, construction technology\nand the art of detail.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Ch3\u003EMaryann Thompson FAIA\u003Cbr \/\u003EFounder and\nPrincipal,\u0026nbsp;Maryann Thompson\nArchitects\u003C\/h3\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMaryann Thompson, FAIA, was educated at Princeton\nUniversity and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where she\nis a member of the Architecture faculty.\u0026nbsp;\nShe founded Maryann Thompson Architects in 2000, following her tenure as\na founding partner of Thompson and Rose Architects.\u0026nbsp; She specializes in architecture that is\nsustainable, regionally driven, and which heightens one\u2019s sense of site and\nlandscape.\u0026nbsp; Her architectural\ninvestigations revolve around ideas like the creation of a rich and thoughtful\nedge between inside and outside; the utilization of light as a material; and\nstrategies for employing natural materials to accentuate a sense of place.\u0026nbsp; Thompson carries degrees in both architecture\nand landscape architecture, bringing to her practice an interdisciplinary\napproach where issues of site and landscape are central to design\nthinking.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThompson\u2019s work has garnered some 60 design awards,\nincluding two AIA National Honor\nAwards and numerous AIA New\nEngland Design Honor Awards and BSA\nHonor Awards for Design Excellence.
